VESSEL | Oil Tanker

DATE | December 2019

LOCATION | Singapore

Overview

The client contacted CTS after experiencing problems with one of their engine unit’s liners. The vessel was scheduled for a long voyage from Singapore therefore the owner wanted to ensure the engine was functioning properly before departure. The client had already planned for one of the engine’s liners to be renewed but wanted a thorough health check of the engine before proceeding with the renewal process. The client requested that CTS complete a full inspection of the engine to determine if there were any additional damaged liners and to check for signs of deterioration.

The vessel was fitted with Main Engine Model-MAN 7G80ME, a 3D scan of the engine’s liners was taken to analyze corrosion, the maximum diameter, wear rates and ovality. The scanning methods applied required no contact during the process which provided a more accurate result.

Scope of Works

• 3D liner scanning
• Provided photos of the piston & liners
• Maximum diameter report
• Analysis of ovality curves of liner
• Corrosion & wear rate analysis

Project Gallery

Result

The project had to be completed as quickly as possible to meet the client’s time constraints. CTS’s team used advanced equipment to see to it that that the project was completed with precision and on time. Although the client was already somewhat aware of the current state of the engine, CTS’s report gave a comprehensive overview and concluded that 5 liners needed to be restored. The photos of the liners and piston ring indicated scuffing and confirmed that both the liner and piston rings were having micro-seizures. After receiving CTS’s report details the client was able to take the decision to stop the vessel to fully repair the engine and order liner replacements.

Client Feedback

“CTS helped us quickly determine the issues with the liners. The data provided enabled us to make a well-informed decision to delay the vessel’s departure for repairs. It was a very useful service and saved us a lot of time.”

VESSEL | Oil Product Tanker

LOCATION | Greece – Gibraltar

DATE | March 2019

Overview

Execute an Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM) survey while sailing to eliminate downtime and also deliver a Repair Specification as per a CAP-1 rating.

The vessel was carrying British Navy cargo and had to adhere to a very strict and busy schedule which did not afford a lenient timeframe. The only period available was between Greece and Gibraltar when the cargo was only half-loaded so that the ballast tanks could be inspected.

We believe in offering all of our clients a reliable worldwide service and that is why our pool of technicians are ready to travel at any hour along with valid seaman books and Schengen visas.

The position of the vessel could only be known 8 hours prior (when it reached its last bunker point) which meant that booking flights and getting the best team available limited the client’s options, turning to CTS for our worldwide reach, local support and 24/7/365 availability teams that can be deployed anywhere around the world at short notice.

Scope of Works:

– UTM towards 3rd SS and preparation of repair specifications as per CAP1 rating.

Result

Our co-ordination teams organised a riding squad of technicians within 10 hours, demonstrating our ability to be where you need us when you need us. Also, by leveraging our vast experience in quick turnaround projects we were able to deploy a strong time management strategy to finish the job on schedule to high standards and importantly, to the strictest of HSEQ regulations and practices.

The client was impressed with our professional work and recommended us to all colleagues to use our services in the future.

Client Feedback

“Punctuality, discipline and quality of works was excellent. Safety procedures followed to an exemplary standard.”

CLIENT | Ship Management Company

VESSEL | Bulk Carrier

LOCATION | Ratnagiri (India)

DATE| October 2018

Overview

The client’s vessel was overdue its inspection as per class schedule for UTM, but due to a tight charter itinerary it was not possible to hold the vessel to carry out surveys.

The areas that required inspection were almost 30 metres high (top level cargo hold bulkheads and shell frames), however a cherry picker could not be used as the cargo holds were in loaded conditions and a discharge operation was continuously in process.

The major challenge of this job was that the vessel’s stay at the discharge port was for only 40 hours when a job of this magnitude would typically require 5-6 days to complete. In this case CTS advised that the best solution in the client’s circumstances would be to provide two expert rope access technician teams to execute this demanding operation due to the nature of the time constraints.

Thanks to the approach taken by CTS, we were able to have personnel working day and night to complete the inspection before the vessel’s 40 hour stay elapsed.

Scope of Works

  • UTM inspection of the top areas of bulkheads and shell frames inside all the 7nos. cargo holds.

Project Gallery

Result

The client was very impressed with our approach and before time job completion, notably that our strategy did not disrupt usual operations and the vessel could continue its tight charter schedule. We are pleased to share that the client has selected CTS for upcoming surveys on other vessels.

Client Feedback

The professional quality, safety standards and overall conduct from CTS was good.

I would not hesitate in recommending the services from CTS Offshore and Marine to others.

CLIENT | Leading Oil Major

VESSEL | Oil Tanker

DATE | Nov 18

LOCATION | Singapore

Overview

Approached by the Client to inspect its vessel’s engine as issues and concerns had arisen over its performance.

Scavenge Space Inspection showed no major signs of failure; hence, CTS went on board to carry out an in-situ liner inspection. We utilise a machine that can be easily deployed from the liner scavenger ports and upon inspection and analysing the data,

CTS provides the probable causes of failure and the possible solutions.

What the Inspection provides:
1. Liner diameters, wear rates, ovality data.

2. Liner issues such as scuffing, clover leafing, high corrosive wear.

The main concern for tankers in Singapore/worldwide is:

1. Immobilisation of the main engine.

2. Very short and uncertain port stay.

CTS engages a technology which allows:
1. No immobilisation of the Main Engine. (It does not require any engine mounting to be removed).

2. A very quick, yet sophisticated method of liner inspection and analysis (taking only 20 minutes per liner).

Scope of Works

Implementation

The machine intelligently self-calibrates and records the required data. Working on the principle of measurement by laser it subsequently provides a 3D liner wear analysis.

The data is then decrypted to give the user access to the following records:

1. Liner maximum dia (machine scans around 200 readings of the liner at various points while continuously rotating).

2. It provides the average wear rate, determining the remaining life hours of the liner.

3. The data interprets the ovality curves of the liner.

4. The tabulated data is used to graph the wear profile along the full depth of the liner.

5. The data is interpreted to point out concerns/issues of cloverleafing, adhesive wear and corrosive wear.

CTS also uses a camera that can take pictures of the liner and cylinder head. These photos can be co related to the graphical data to show any issues/failures.

In this case, the liner of one of the 6 units was completely scuffed though the other 5 liners were in good condition.

The data and photos proved that the liner in its entirety was scuffed. Possible causes are the failure of the alpha lubricator for that unit.

Project Gallery

Result

The results of the inspection and analysis were thorough and successfully evidenced so that the advice we offered to the Client, was well founded and quantifiable. We advised the Client to renew the liner at the earliest opportunity to prevent failure of rings.

Due to over delivering and surpassing expectations, CTS is pleased to share that the client has contracted us for work on further vessels this coming year.

Client Feedback

The Fleet Manager was very pleased with the results.

He was assured by the data provided, and his doubt was confirmed that the liner had failed and should be renewed.

He was impressed by the machine methodology of deployment and data interpretation.

VESSEL | Bulk Carrier

DATE | September 2017

LOCATION| In-situ

Project Brief

In August, CTS was approached by a long-term client to examine and repair the bottom area of its vessel’s number one water ballast tank and forepeak tank – all within a complete turnaround of 35 days.

Our team executed the following:

  • Replacing six main frames partially on the bottom, and to add inserts to three of the secondary frames on the port-side
  • Replacing three main frames partially on the bottom on the starboard-side
  • Renewing 27 tonnes of steel in the ballast tank and forepeak tank

Scope of Work

The work took place in-situ with the vessel to minimise the ship’s downtime and to ensure a swift response from our technicians, who were able to conduct a thorough survey of the work that needed to be carried out and advise and work accordingly.

As ballast still remained in the tanks, the hot work inside the forepeak was carefully planned. Once the ballast water had been discharged, the hot work was able to commence inside the forepeak.

Project Gallery

Results

The total personnel involved in this project: eight.

This reflects the realities of in-situ, afloat services onboard: by providing fully trained and skilful welders, CTS eliminated the vessel’s downtime, whilst maintaining the highest level of safety standards within the industry.

Project Brief

CTS Offshore and Marine received an enquiry to carry out urgent steel repairs on a vessel’s damaged cargo tanks at Singapore.

The vessel was inspected, and a plan was submitted within a day’s notice. The execution plan took into account the restriction of hot work permit availability of only 4 days by Singapore Port Authorities and the requirements to complete to the satisfaction of CLASS. Time was of the essence for the vessel to meet the next Lay-Can.

CTS Offshore and Marine deployed a team of 40 skilled manpower & immediate pre-fabrication of girders and bulkheads in our workshop was started. The tasks were coordinated with precision and safely executed without the need of taking the vessel to the shipyard, saving the owners considerable time and costs.

Scope of Work

  • Steel repair / renewal work
  • Riding teams & equipment supply
  • Scaffolding & painting
  • NDT inspection

A team was deployed to take up the task at anchorage; it required tower staging of 14m high and 12m wide in 4 different locations to renew steel of about 8 MT.

The job was immaculately planned, with the prefabrication of the girders and the bulkhead at CTS workshop ashore, whilst the team on board cut the damaged steel. The prefabrication was then transported to the vessel and fitted diligently.

On request of the owners, additional required services for accommodation furniture and PV valve testing were seamlessly arranged.
