DATE | Jan. 2021 – Feb. 2021

LOCATION | Voyage Repair

Overview

A leading ship management company approached CTS to modify their container ship’s main engine and scrubber uptakes to ensure compliance with commercial air draft requirements. However, the vessel could not be stopped to carry out the repairs as this would require the vessel to be off hired; this presented a challenge as the project involved heavy equipment to be lifted and all work to be executed at sea in harsh weather conditions. However, CTS quickly devised a plan of action to guarantee that the work was completed safely and efficiently.

Scope of Works

CTS provided a team of experienced riggers, fitters, and certified welders to carry out the modification works on the ship’s two funnel uptakes. All work was executed at height and required a safe staging framework to access the work area. Our team implemented electric chain hoists and fabricated custom frames to assist in lifting the heavy equipment. The CTS team also constructed a temporary shelter to cover the work area and protect the crew and equipment from the weather.

Result

The team carried out the modifications as per the owner’s and Class requirements while ensuring HSEQ standards were met throughout the process. CTS’s vast experience working in harsh environments in-situ enabled our team to overcome the challenges faced on board. By streamlining all work processes, CTS ensured
that the project was successfully completed on schedule.

Client Feedback

“Excellent work and high safety standards demonstrated by the team. We couldn’t have asked for a more professional team. Well done. ”

DATE | June 2020

LOCATION | Southampton, UK

Overview

CTS Offshore and Marine received an inquiry from a Cruise Ship Management Company to replace their passenger ship’s HHP type, stockless anchor. CTS quickly responded to the inquiry and was promptly awarded the job. CTS immediately mobilized a six-man team and the necessary lifting equipment to carry out the job. Our team developed a work procedure and provided port permits to remove and replace the anchor swiftly and carefully.

Scope of Works

With a 100-ton crane and an aerial work platform, our team was able to lower the old anchor into a safe position to allow for the crane’s straps to be attached. Once attached, the old anchor was lifted onto the quayside, where CTS teams proceeded to remove its chain. The chain was then carefully placed aside
until the new anchor arrived to prevent any potential damage to the ship. Once the new anchor arrived, it was lifted onto a work barge while the chain was lowered by the crew to commence the attachment. After the anchor replacement was completed, the new anchor was hoisted into its holding cradle in the bow. The old anchor was then taken for disposal as per client instruction.

Project Gallery

Result

To meet the vessel’s tight deadline, CTS suggested the swivel shackle be replaced in addition to the anchor to allow for quicker turnaround time. CTS was able to source the replacement anchor and swivel shackle quickly and completed the work within the required time frame.

Client Feedback

“Impeccable service. The team was very knowledgeable and worked efficiently to finish the project safely and on time. I would highly recommend CTS’s services and look forward to working with them in the future.”

VESSEL | Bulk Carrier

DATE | December 2019-January 2020

LOCATION | Kuwait

Overview

CTS received an urgent inquiry from a leading shipowner and operating group regarding their 189-meter bulk carrier. The vessel’s cargo hold plates suffered damage and required a quick repair as the vessel needed to adhere to a strict schedule. CTS, therefore, sent a team of coded welders to complete the steel renewal. The damage was located in cargo hold no. 1 between frame no. 209 and 210 of the vessel. After further inspection, CTS devised an elaborate plan to remove the damaged area as quickly as possible.

Scope of Works

Once the cargo was discharged, and the hold wash was completed; ventilation was arranged within the hold and the ballast tank. Tower staging was erected in both areas and inspected to confirm safe access. All stiffeners were washed out from the ballast tank side. The damaged area was cropped and renewed with a 400mm x 300mm AH 36 high strength structural steel plate. The initial fitting and welding were carried out from the ballast tank area, while the back gouging and filler welding was completed from the cargo hold side.

Project Gallery

Result

The cargo hold plates were renewed, and dye penetrant tested to ensure the welding seams met industry standards. With CTS’s detailed planning, the project was successfully completed within the required timeframe, saving the vessel owner significant downtime and lost operational cost.

Client Feedback

“We would like to thank CTS for their outstanding work onboard. Their team’s performance, as demonstrated by the excellence of their work, exceeds industry standards. We look forward to working with CTS in the near future.”

DATE | September 2019

LOCATION | Singapore

Overview

CTS was approached by the vessel owners to replace a damaged Yanmar 6EY22W engine onboard one of their bulk carriers. CTS, with their Yanmar specialist (twelve years of experience), compiled a six-man team to ensure that the overhaul went smoothly. The team was met with a challenge when it came to getting the new engine inside the engine room as the skylight was small, and the engine itself was over the safe working load limit of the vessel’s crane. There were also no lifting points or standard procedure to lift the engine. However, after careful planning, the team was able to come up with a tailor-made solution.

Scope of Works

CTS conducted a risk assessment for the necessary lifting works, and new strong points were welded in the engine room to facilitate the transfer of the engine and to mitigate the risk to a minimum. Despite the restricted entry space for the engine, the team was able to solve the issue by dismantling the engine in the CTS workshop and customizing it to fit the existing bedplate. CTS specialists also designed and fabricated a structure to lift the engine vertically so it could easily pass through the skylight. Once the engine was mounted on the bedplate and built up, the electrical system was modified and made compatible with the new engine. The engine was commissioned, and all trials carried out were witnessed by the class surveyor.

Project Gallery

Result

The job was complicated by the limited space of the engine room; however, the CTS service team was able to adapt and worked efficiently to complete the overhaul. The scope of work was completed within seven days. The client appreciated CTS’s professional and thorough approach and was satisfied with the team’s quality work.

Client Feedback

“The job was executed very safely and professionally. The team was experienced in their work. The engineer had an excellent knowledge of the engine.”

Project Brief

In August, CTS was approached by a long-term client to examine and repair the bottom area of its vessel’s number one water ballast tank and forepeak tank – all within a complete turnaround of 35 days.

Our team executed the following:

  • Replacing six main frames partially on the bottom, and to add inserts to three of the secondary frames on the port-side
  • Replacing three main frames partially on the bottom on the starboard-side
  • Renewing 27 tonnes of steel in the ballast tank and forepeak tank

Scope of Work

The work took place in-situ with the vessel to minimise the ship’s downtime and to ensure a swift response from our technicians, who were able to conduct a thorough survey of the work that needed to be carried out and advise and work accordingly.

As ballast still remained in the tanks, the hot work inside the forepeak was carefully planned. Once the ballast water had been discharged, the hot work was able to commence inside the forepeak.

Project Gallery

Results

The total personnel involved in this project: eight.

This reflects the realities of in-situ, afloat services onboard: by providing fully trained and skilful welders, CTS eliminated the vessel’s downtime, whilst maintaining the highest level of safety standards within the industry.
